Start every game with confidence!

The two greatest challenges for beginning chess players are not only to survive the openings phase, but also to choose appropriate attack and defence formations in the process. Winning Chess Openings shows players how to do both. In Yasser Seirawan's entertaining, easy-to-follow style, they are shown formations that can be used with other White or Black pieces.

Description:

Technique in chess, as Abrahams defines it, is not what to do but how to do it. Good players play technique without knowing it. However, any player can build up his awareness of powers and limitations of the pieces, the geometry of the board, and certain dexterities of play In this book the author of the well-known Teach Yourself Chess explains the general concepts of chess technique and the methods for using technique to plan ahead, to gain an advantage (or prevent your opponent from doing so) and to cash in that advantage for a winning situation.

A superb guide to the general concepts of chess technique and the methods for using technique to plan ahead. Early initiative and control of the center, translating an advantage into the middle ... Read more »

Rating: 5

Lev Alburt's seven volume course is uniquely effective in taking a diligent student from beginner to about expert level. Volume I is merely an introduction to the game. Review:

Lev Alburt's materials work! TRUST ME! I KNOW!

I bought the first and second volumes of Lev Alburt's chess course. The first one, I ended up teaching my little brother, and he learned how to play chess up to the intermediate level. Oddly, I had learned most of volume I throughout playing 20 years of chess. At 34, I managed to buy volume II, and it took me a little over a month to complete the volume II. It taught me endgame knowledge I was not incorporating into my play. Something extremely important! It also taught me what I need to know to get to my desired 1800 strength. I now play with great insight into the endgame and know that opening is minor to the class player. I discover tactics work better ... Read more »

An excellent guide to playing good endgames

Rating: 5

This little book is excellent. It compares very well to Edmar Mednis's books on the endgame, inasmuch as it explains in detail how to make plans in the endgame and typical mistakes to avoid. Highly recommended.

Description:

After the immense success of the first two editions, the chess world has been anticipating the next instalment with baited breath... and now the wait is over! Once again this is a fully revised edition of John Watson's classic Play the French, providing Black with a complete repertoire in the French Defence, one of the most strategically and dynamically complex opening systems. As is typical with his books, Watson often arms the reader with not one, but a choice of two and sometimes three lines against every main variation. Watson also presents a thorough grounding on the positional and tactical aspects of the opening and outlines the typical plans for both White and Black. This is particularly welcome for those newcomers wishing to add the French Defence to their openings armoury. Last, but not least, hardened French Defence devot ... Read more »
